About the Ship
Boarding Norwegian Cruise Lines’ newest offering can be a heady experience. Featuring 14 decks, the 93,000-ton, 965-foot Norwegian Pearl is one of the biggest—and newest—ships in the NCL fleet. Though the size can be daunting, it also means passengers will find an expansive number of things to do on board. With an inaugural sailing in 2007, the Pearl is a thoroughly modern ship, offering a number of firsts—from a bowling alley to a rock climbing wall—for NCL. The Pearl’s 2,394 passengers will also find an easygoing onboard attitude with Norwegian’s “Freestyle Cruising” ethos represented in everything from the 12 onboard dining options to the suggested dress code. Partly due to its size and options, this newest addition to NCL’s “modern fleet”, which includes sister ships Jade, Jewell, and Gem, offers voyagers a cruise experience that will meet the expectations of just about any age group or demographic.
In the freestyle spirit, Pearl is geared towards travelers searching for a casual cruising experience. Beyond one restaurant with a “no jeans” policy, guests will find precious little in the way of formalities onboard. This atmosphere is helped along by a seasoned and friendly crew, top-notch dining establishments, and roomy and spacious accommodations.
Bliss Ultra Lounge & Night Club: With its VIP areas and velvet-draped furniture, Bliss, on its surface, resembles a modern, big-city night club. What sets it apart is the four-lane bowling alley that’s been incorporated into the middle of the dance floor. A first for the cruise industry, the alley is a popular onboard attraction—both during the day and well into the night.
Nintendo Wii on the Big Screen: Each day at Noon, kids and kids at heart line up to compete at tennis, boxing, or golf—on a 20-foot, LED TV screen. NCL’s partnership with Nintendo makes this gamer’s fantasy possible.
Teppanyaki Room: Asian cuisine meets performance art at this restaurant where the chef routines—involving everything from ingredients to salt shakers to, yes, knives—are as much a part of the experience as the food itself.
The Pearl’s multiple onboard offerings and activities make it the perfect ship for families, and it’s no surprise to see several multi-generational groups on a given cruise. In fact, in the past six years, the average age onboard had dropped over a decade to 45. In addition, the “Freestyle Cruising” program attracts those who seek to experience a cruise while maintaining their individual schedules and desires. Food and dining are paramount onboard, but there’s also a fair number who utilize the Body Waves Fitness Center and South Pacific Spa and Beauty Salon. Americans (particularly Californians) dominate the Alaskan itineraries, while the tropical destinations have a more East Coast and international clientele. Passengers looking for a more traditional cruise might be disappointed, and those looking for the intimate experience of a small ship might not enjoy the sheer number of travelers represented.
