About the Ship
Statendam, which is actually the fifth ship to bear this name in the 133-year history of Holland America Line—is a 720-foot, 55,000 ton ship that cruises throughout the Pacific, ranging from Alaskan fjords all the way to Australian beaches. Capable of hosting 1,266 passengers, the ship is almost structurally identical to its sister ships Statendam and Veendam. Built in 2993 and refurbished in 2005, it combines modern amenities with historic ambience to create an atmosphere that attracts veteran cruisers, retirees, and others who value a traditional, luxurious vacation.
Statendam blends a reverence for Dutch history with a passion for modern technology and amenities. The ship’s library and Internet café are first-rate, and, as on all Holland America ships, service is outstanding. Relaxation rules on this vessel; at the outdoor pool, reading and card games prevail over the belly-flop contests found on other cruise lines.
The Lido Pool, a passenger favorite, is covered by a retractable glass roof. The ship’s fitness center boasts expansive views over the bow, numerous cardiovascular exercise machines, and few crowds. And the Greenhouse Spa is one of the best at sea, offering replenishing skin treatments, massages, salon services, and a hydrotherapy pool.
Statendam is best suited for passengers in search of a traditional cruising experience. There are few late-night dance parties on this vessel, and the casino is anything but raucous. Passengers tend to be affluent American retirees and older couples—think fifties, sixties, and up. Families are somewhat common during school breaks, but children are almost nonexistent during school months. This is an excellent ship for veteran cruisers—in fact, the majority of passengers tend to be repeat Holland America customers.
