About the Ship
At the time of its launch in January 2004, the
Queen Mary 2
(QM2) was the largest passenger ship ever built. (It has since surrendered that distinction, but only in tonnage; at 1,132 feet, it remains the longest passenger ship in the world.) QM2 weighs an astonishing 151,000 tons and is capable of hosting 2,620 passengers. The ship is primarily an ocean liner, executing transatlantic crossings between Southampton and New York. QM2 is also one of the most luxurious ships in the world, drawing a passenger complement comprised of the most discerning travelers from across the globe.
Who Should Go
QM2 represents a new age of ocean cruising—one in which first-class service meets cutting edge technology, design, and amenities. The bulk of the passenger complement consists primarily of well-to-do Europeans and North Americans in search of a once-in-a-lifetime cruise; in fact, a large percentage of passengers are first-time cruisers. While the QM2 offers a variety of cabin categories, the ship caters primarily to travelers who value the luxury, service, and tradition that set Cunard apart from the crowd. Families are welcomed—the ship features a full staff of nannies and a program of children’s activities—but most passengers are in their fifties, sixties, and seventies.
What to Expect
QM2 was the first ship built for the exclusive purpose of transatlantic cruising in over 35 years. As such, it has all the elements of a classic ocean liner—grand public spaces, top-tier service, and dining rooms that are separated by cabin category. Expect luxury, formality, and tradition on this stately ship.
Amenity Highlights
QM2’s list of amenities is lengthy and impressive. Highlights include the Queens Room (which houses the largest dance floor at sea), Illuminations Planetarium (the world’s first floating planetarium), a massive library, the Canyon Ranch Spa Club, and the one and only shipboard Veuve Clicquot Champagne Bar.
